Cheap fake, good for some jobs

This looks like a cheap copy of a more expensive Leister model. As others have pointed out, the temperature control is very finicky. It makes a quick transition from cold to full heat in a fraction of a turn. (If you know your way around, this can be partially solved by replacing the 330K potentiometer with a 100K potentiometer, or simply connecting a 100K resistor across two wires. Another option is to connect it to the wattmeter leaving it plugged in so you can make any fine-tuning adjustments you need.) Next problem: Maximum output is only about half the advertised 1600 watts, so it may not get hot enough for some plastics. Again, this looks like a problem with the control scheme. The heater element draws about 1500 watts at 120 volts, but the SCR control circuit only boosts it to 700 watts. Good for some jobs, not good enough for others. If you can live with those limitations, do it. Otherwise, be prepared to pay a lot more for one of the original instruments.

Pros
  • This heat gun's temperature and power is adjustable for different melting temperatures, allowing you to work with a variety of plastic materials
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
