fun new game - standard card games

I like everything about this game. The cards are colorful and durable. The game is simple enough for kids but interesting enough to keep adults entertained too. We first saw it at a school game night. What attracted me at the time was that it didn't have all the electronic bells and whistles of some other games and it seemed like it would travel well. How to play: There are 12 queen cards. Each queen is worth a different number of points. They lay out all queen cards face down (so they sleep). Then you take the rest of the deck and deal 5 cards each. The remaining cards are placed face down on the deck. When it is your turn, you must choose from the cards in your hand and decide what action you want to take. There are 3 different "Action" cards. The king card can be used to wake up the sleeping queen and place her face up in front of you. The Knight card can be played to capture someone else's queen. Or the Sleeping Potion card puts someone's queen back to sleep (meaning they lose their queen and have to put her face down along with the other sleeping queens). There are also "Protection" cards. The dragon card prevents the knight from stealing the queen. The Magic Wand card blocks Sleeping Potion. There are also numbered cards that have no real value and can be exchanged for better cards if you have no other options. There are a few other rules and variations, but that's the general gist of the game. The aim of the game can also vary. You can play by counting points (whoever has the most points wins) or you can play by counting queens (whoever has the most queens after all queens have awakened). Each game lasts about 20 minutes, so not too long. to lose the children's interest. I love that a six year old invented this game! I will say that you can recreate this game using a regular deck of cards if you have the instructions. But you would miss the beautiful illustrations and funny names of kings and queens (characters like "Pancake Queen" and "Dye King"). I love this game and am so happy we took the risk.
