If you have cats, you have a litter box. If you have a tray, you have to "dig up buried treasure" and scrape things off the walls. That can be cruel for a plastic dustpan. The steel/aluminum/metal ones are expensive in stores (starting at $30), which never seemed reasonable, but after breaking another shovel I went for it. I'm SO glad I did! It's both wide and deep, so even for cats who make more messes than others (my cats drink a lot, for example), you can get everything in one scoop. The handle is longer than most plastic handles, so you don't have to worry about that cataclysmic moment when you start shoveling and scrape your knuckles on a pile of sand that's been through untold horrors. And a stainless steel drum roll, please. No break. Digging into the ground or scraping from the side doesn't result in that dreaded "snapping," meaning you have to run to the store to buy a new shovel. A few things to keep in mind. First, my wife says the holes are too big and small "gems" could fit through them. I personally don't believe in it, but it's worth considering. Second, and more importantly, you'll notice a weight difference after switching from plastic to this one. Huge weight difference. It's not heavy (less than half a pound and probably closer to a quarter of a pound), but it's heavy compared to a plastic shovel. You'll get used to it after a few days, but you'll definitely notice. And I don't think I need to say anything about keeping it clean. Dream. I wish I had done this many years ago. But hey, better late than never.
