I've never had an irrigator - they've always been big and flossing has worked for me. After I finally bought an electric toothbrush on the recommendation of my hygienist and had good experiences with it, I then decided to complete my dental care arsenal with an oral irrigator. I chose the ION because it's compact, lithium-powered, and yet claims to be just as powerful as (or very close to) larger mains-powered devices. After using it for about a week, I appreciated its compact and thoughtful design. This device doesn't come cheap, but if you're looking to purchase a personal watering filament, this is probably the best way to go. However, using one of these devices for the first time takes some getting used to. Remember that you must lean close to the sink when using the sink - if this is physically difficult for you, then stick to flossing. Second, no matter how well I'm doing, I'm stoked, but some water still runs down my hands onto the countertop. Results? I use it pretty close to the strongest setting and the pulse is still comfortable on my teeth and gums. It definitely clears mouth debris, but it remains to be seen if it will be as effective as dental floss. I think both methods have their advantages, so I started flossing in the morning and using the irrigator in the evening. One thing is for sure, I have a newfound respect for female dental hygienists. It must be hard work. :)
