So far I haven't had a single problem I've read about. I think if you remove a lot of them you will probably break them because they are very tight. I've even seen pics where people haven't quite adjusted it, if it's uneven or the back lip doesn't curve evenly around the back it's not quite there. Worked and I slept in it, no damage, it picks up dirt very easily but you just wash it off. Eventually I'll have to check because people have said it broke after a period of time, but by then I'll probably change it anyway, so for what I paid for it it does the job. Definitely protective
