I did this on an 11 day hike in New Mexico. I clipped it to the top of my backpack for charging while hiking. I used it to charge my external battery during the day which charged my phone at night. This charger has a large surface. I've met many other backpackers with smaller solar chargers complaining that their chargers can't provide enough power to their phones. Not only was I able to keep my phone fully charged, but also several other phones in my group. I definitely recommend using a battery pack when hiking instead of directly charging phones. I tried to charge my friend's iPhone while walking. The phone vibrator buzzed every few seconds when I walked under the shade of a tree, which got annoying very quickly, and I think the power consumed in all those beeps was probably using more power than the phone was collecting. Another tip is to run the cable to the items you are charging just below the solar panel. Because the sun shines directly on the solar cell, the area directly below tends to heat up and batteries and phones will stop charging if they get too hot. The solution is to route the USB cables to your devices out of direct sunlight.
