Review on Lansky 2D2C Diamond Ceramic Four: Ultimate Sharpening Solution for Precision by Johnny Pigao

imperfect but very effective sharpener

I had a hard time with these sharpeners. First I bought the ceramic version of the 4 rod box. He doesn't have diamond sharpeners for the middle class. Not only did it turn out exactly like that version, but one of the medium-grit rods had a permanent drill that rendered it useless, so it went back. He also had very wobbly rods, more on that now. This diamond sharpener has some issues that all Lansky boxes have and that many people have commented on. The poles dangle in the holes. This is not good. You can't sharpen effectively with shaky sticks and a float angle. This means you have to hold the tips of the rods while sharpening to keep them stable. This is unacceptable to me and I could return it and just bite the bullet with a Spyderco sharpener. However, I have a crappy Chinese knife and a high-quality steel Hap40 Spyderco. The Spyderco can shave right out of the box and is very low maintenance, but I've never shaved or even covered a ceramic box with a china knife, but I shaved quite easily with a diamond box. Sure, holding the bars in place was awkward and annoying, but for a $20 sharpener, it works pretty well. I like to use the "cut bread" grinding method recommended in the instructions. It works fine and fast. I dont know. Technically this is a great sharpener for the price, but the wobbly handles are really annoying and need to be stabilized to make this sharpener really effective. If I wasn't constantly taking them off, I would just put something inside to stabilize them. On the other hand, I mostly use my Spyderco knife and it doesn't really need much sharpening, so this box is probably good enough. Sharper Spyderco corners on Sharpmaker, I would definitely upgrade.

Pros
  • sharpening stones
Cons
  • without automatic sharpening
