$20 Refrigerator Compressor Repair

My almost 40 years of experience with refrigeration, commercial and domestic appliances including home appliances and I believe one of these 3 in 1 kits should be in the tool box . Relay failures and overloads are very common these days, and if your fridge is making that familiar clicking noise and the compressor won't start, you may be intimidated by the cost of replacing a refrigeration system component. But first, diagnosing the electrical system on the unit can sometimes be a very useful solution. Installing this relay/overload/capacitor in a box is a very simple process. Just find the compressor and remove the cover, remove the relay, overload and capacitor, then look at the compressor's terminal 3, the top of the triangle is common (the black wire on the kit goes here), the right side of the terminal triangle is the "run" terminal (red goes here) and then the left pin which is the start (white wire) then the two remaining black wires go to the common wire (usually white) from the relay and the other to the power side which was connected to one side of the overload. The kit includes the wire nuts needed to trim the old terminals and connect the wires to the kit. Then plug it in and when your compressor kicks in there's a normal hum and you're done. For less than $20, it's worth a try. Another great toolbox item.
