Review on πŸ“€ Panasonic DMP-BD75 High-Speed Start Blu-ray Disc Player by Richard Lamptey

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Completely unimpressed with the player and Panasonic

I bought this Blu-ray player for my living room based on strong reviews from specialist publications. It arrived and I was initially impressed. I couldn't believe how clear the picture was and loved the access to online videos. Then the problems started during the first session of watching the film. The player shut down randomly - it turned off my Pioneer AV receiver and then restarted it. It lasted about 15-20 seconds with the movie/Netflix presentation continuing. I tried to update the firmware and the device got stuck. Since it was in the first 30 days, the player went back to Revain for a replacement. The second player came and I was able to continue updating the firmware. However, the random shutdowns of my AV receiver continued. I called Panasonic technical support and they told me that I had connected the unit incorrectly and that I should reroute the signal from the DVD player to the TV and then back to the receiver. Hm. I asked if there were other options and they told me no. Since I have cables in the walls for my system, this was not an option. We continued on the phone for some time and ultimately her tech support was unhelpful and she explained that she had no other way to resolve the issue. On the contrary, when I asked the receiver manufacturer for help, they actually tried to fix the problem and offered alternatives to fix the problem - even suggested some methods that might make the Blu-ray player work . The bottom line is that the player refused to work with my Pioneer receiver. I was forced to buy another BR turntable and had no problems. Panasonic went to another room that didn't have a receiver in the mix and hasn't had any issues since. So I think 2 stars is appropriate here. While the player is working, I cannot forgive the freezing of the first block when updating the firmware. Secondly, the fact that the device cannot be connected to a Pioneer receiver is insane. I think I'm hardly the only one who wants to connect a Blu-Ray player through the receiver. If a product can't do that, I think it's poorly designed/made. Finally, Panasonic's terrible customer support made me seriously regret my decision to buy this device. Of course, neither this device nor Panasonic is worth your money.
