My wife wanted two "floating" shelves in our old farmhouse kitchen. In our barn she found wood, parts of an old feeding trough. I figured a clever way to hang them would be to use a Kreg pocket hole gauge to drill holes that lined up with the studs and secure them with large wood screws. It worked but the shelves didn't feel secure. The wood is very soft, probably poplar, and the countersunk screws go deeper but never tighten. I bought these WoodPro washer bolts thinking they would fit in a pocket hole and be snug. They worked exactly as I had hoped. I put 5 screws in each shelf. Each is screwed into a hairpin which is made of oak. I weigh 200 kilos and I can hang on these shelves with no problem. You're not going anywhere.
