I was an idiot and didn't know I had a USB 2.0 kit until I ripped open the box and used it. Therefore, you may need a USB 3.0 drive if your devices support it. But speed is not my main concern when installing a new image on my computers. That's just about enough to create a recovery image of each of the versions I had at home: Dell with Windows 8 Initial, Surface with Windows 10 Home, and our main desktop with Windows 10 Pro. Three images, three drives, just no USB 3.
