I understand people saying it can cause micro scratches. If you want to be on the safe side, simply take a piece of paper towel and use rubber bands to attach the paper towel to the side of the cleaning magnet. So you have a new piece of towel for every cleaning. There is no risk of sand getting stuck on the cleaning side and causing serious scratches. Use this magnet VERY close to the ground, next to the sandy bottom. Sand can get on the undergrowth and cause serious scratches. Learn from my mistake or you'll hate yourself for scratching your new tank. My biggest complaint is that I have a 3/4" thick Plexiglas tank and the magnet doesn't seem to hold very firmly. I have to brush very slowly or the brush side will loosen and float up.
