Don't worry if you use the LED as a guide when changing the filter . This happens almost instantly and doesn't really work the way the manufacturer thinks or should. I just sealed it with black tape after it "wouldn't go off" after changing the filter and cleaning the unit monthly. It's not scary to clean, but it's difficult to get into the corners and bottom of the unit with a brush. You'd think the industry would have already figured out that a round container is easier to clean. The unit I have is very quiet but sometimes the lid vibrates so I just pressed it down with a piece of tape and then took it off to clean it so this is an easy fix to a small problem. I still recommend it as a decent low-maintenance filtration system for small aquariums.
