Review on Monoxide Detector Combination Indicator Standards by Jayt Shields

Does not detect smoke

This is advertised as a smoke and carbon monoxide detector but tested without smoke. I put in three AA batteries and the alarm went off when I pushed the button and the light came on. Then we used an electric lighter and when it didn't light up I lit a candle. I held this detector right over the candle and nothing happened. Then I lit the paper and it still didn't go out. It may work with carbon monoxide, but I don't have a test kit to tell. At the moment I don't know if it's worth installing it in my house to detect carbon monoxide. I think I'll take another one. We already have smoke alarms but were told they were getting old and needed replacing. The alarm clock is not very loud. My husband is hard of hearing and doesn't hear him at all, although I can hear him when I'm near him. It comes with screws and instructions but no batteries. It's easy to open, but I haven't tried changing the batteries once it's ceiling mounted. It seems that replacing batteries will be difficult, as is the case with most smoke alarms, so use good quality batteries first. The green light flashes quickly. Although the packaging says CO and smoke, the label inside the unit says "Carbon Monoxide Alarm". There is also talk of weekly checking and monthly vacuuming of the outside of the unit. This is not very convenient if you place the sensor on the ceiling. They warn that it should not be thrown in the trash can. Most smoke alarms require special disposal. The manufacturer is located in China.
