Review on Enhanced Sony ICD-UX200 Digital Voice Recorder with Integrated Stereo Microphone (Silver) by Leon Johnsson

Working - Portable audio and video

I bought this recorder for lectures, especially French, and for study interviews. I've had it for about two weeks and I have to say I'm very satisfied. Obviously this is a portable device and does not have studio quality recording. This is very good for my purposes; sometimes these lecture halls are huge and the professor walks 10 or 15 feet behind me without a microphone, it picks him up anyway. After figuring out the sensitivity of the mic, it was nice to get straight to the point. I like that you can change folder names and add subfolders (though only from a computer) because it helps organize my lectures. I record to the highest quality and can accommodate exactly two weeks of lectures (22 hours). Battery life is pretty decent, I wish it was a little longer, but recording quality certainly has something to do with it. I have to charge it every other day or every third day. Transferring files is very easy. I don't like that you can't change the filename on the recorder itself. You can rename the file on the computer, but it will still appear on the voice recorder with the dated series name. Not really important, but just one of those little "well, why the hell can't I?". You cannot use the noise canceling function with the internal microphone, only with the external jack. I don't have it and don't use it, so I can't use this feature and therefore judge it. I wish it would allow me to do this because I feel it can be very helpful. At the end of the day I am still very happy with this purchase. In my opinion, anyone who needs a recorder for professional reasons should do without money. If you're a struggling French student, forgetful mom, or need a casual start, this is a good buy.

Pros
  • Sound monitoring during recording
Cons
  • No reminder
