Doesn't work in Safety & Security

I put one of these in the basement next to the stove and kettle. Yesterday I had some work done on my gas lines and the whole basement absolutely reeked of gas but this alarm didn't make a sound or register anything. I doubt the usefulness of a product that doesn't detect gas concentrations strongly enough to smell.
