This stone cuts quite aggressively due to the surface it leaves behind. This waterstone doesn't cut as fast as a diamond plate, but because the grit is finer, the surface is smoother. It cuts faster than a ceramic block of the same grit, so you can use the 1000 grit side to remove small chips and still get a relatively smooth finish. Be careful not to scratch the stone, as it is softer and more prone to damage than almost anything I have used, including natural Arkansas stones, the aforementioned ceramic stones, and diamond slabs. The 4000 grit side collects quite a bit of sludge when sharpened, but cleans up fairly easily, and even after heavy use, the surface washes almost completely clean. After working with this stone I was able to achieve a polished edge fairly quickly with a loaded band. Overall I am very pleased with the results achieved with this combination stone.
