I hear an annoying noise when the device is powered by the AC adapter. It's hard to describe the sound other than it's quite high pitched and can be heard several feet away in a home office. I can't live with that. Luckily, with the hub's power supply disabled, I seem to be able to connect up to 2 external hard drives (each with their own power supply) with good performance. When I add the 3rd hard drive, the 3rd hard drive complains and makes a clicking noise. This drive works fine when I use it on another computer. However, I don't need an AC adapter for some functions, such as charging or connecting multiple cell phones, flash drives, and various portable devices. So I've already added it to my daily desktop setup - I just wish it was quieter so I can connect more hard drives. Please note that if you use it like I did, the device usually remembers the on/off state. toggles when I turn my computer off and on again. But when I turn off the dock it's connected to, it forgets the state of the switches, everything is off by default. So sometimes I have to turn each switch manually again. Again, this would not be necessary if the device were quieter.
