Review on Purple 4TB Surveillance Hard Drive by David Ruwala

INTEREST - RANDOM ERRORS

I bought this WD102PURZ because the WD Purple was the most recommended drive for 24/7/365 surveillance among the members of the IPCamTalk Forums is video surveillance. Blue Iris systems and software. When I bought it, I chose the '102' version over the '101' version, thinking (of course) the newer the better. In hindsight, I wish I hadn't been so quick and stuck with the more tried-and-true 101 instead. I even chatted with WD to see the differences between the two models as the 102 didn't even show up on THEIR website, only on Revine. WD couldn't explain the difference between the two. IR, r? This 102 may be the ONLY one that will fail, or it may be one of many, but this is the one I have and it caused a lot of trouble. The drive mounts and starts, but then randomly stops spinning and disappears from Windows. Unplug/plug it back in, it will start again but is not reliable making it useless for its intended purpose. I tried it with external drive cases and different cables and ended up installing it straight into a completely different computer and it randomly stops. WD will issue an RMA, but I am not happy with the hassles and costs associated with trying to fix problems on my system. I have *MANY* WD products. Regardless, I cannot recommend the WD102PURZ.
