Using a hydrometer to measure the specific gravity of water is a mixed bag. However, there are several ways to continue getting accurate readings. First pour water slowly, make sure all the fresh water has been poured out, so measure the first time, and then drain and measure again. This usually gives more accurate readings. and always make sure there are no bubbles on the gauge block. Bubbles can severely affect reading. Definitely a lot cheaper than a refractometer. I'll get one later, but for now that's enough as I'm just starting out.
