I bought this to replace a similar sharpener I've had in the past which was worn out and no longer producing a clean sharpening (it was beginning to damage the knives sharpened in it). In comparison, the grippy material on the bottom of this sharpener doesn't hold the sharpener in place as well, despite applying a large area to the countertop. The labels on the sharpener aren't very intuitive either. Basically you move from left to right, each successive stone giving a thinner edge and ending with a ceramic (white) stone. Even firm pressure and two to three passes over each knife should result in a relatively sharp knife, provided it is sharpened regularly as the blade becomes dull. Despite the shortcomings, for such a price it is quite a worthy thing. Review updated (11/14/20) After infrequent use, I cannot recommend this sharpener. Grinding surfaces either wear out badly or quickly lose their effectiveness. It no longer sharpens any of the knives I've tried with it. Save money and buy a sharpener made of better materials, especially if you have some money invested in cutlery. I threw mine away before she does any more damage.
