Review on 🐠 Increase Your Aquarium's Water Filtration with the Aquarium Technology, Inc. Filter Max Pre-Filter by Timothy Xayamonty

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Very versatile inlet pre-filter, flimsy adapters.

This pre-filter is ideal for a wide range of hob and canister filters. I have one for my Sunsun 303b canister and I just bought a second one for my Aquaclear 70. You can see how it fits the Aquaclear 70 (and 110) inlet. The only reason I'm giving this four stars is for the same reason everyone else mentions the clear plastic elbows. They are brittle and will break. It won't crack, it will crack. I installed the first one on my Sunsun intake manifold about three weeks ago, no cracks. About a week ago I noticed that there was a hairline tear on the elbow closest to the sponge. This inlet filter is basically hung in the water in a corner just above the gravel. So the tension/voltage across it is minimal, if any. In the picture you can see how it starts where the two elbows meet and goes to the right, diagonally up and then to the right again. I'm going to super tape the crack to prevent it from propagating, but the detail is weak. Update March 23, 2020 - Downgrading from 4 stars to 2 stars. Well I have two of these and after one successful cleaning the second time this setup was due to be cleaned (today) the knee was completely torn. Two issues with these fittings, 1 is super thin. This is about half the thickness of the PVC. The 2 fittings are non-slip, which means that when you snap them together, they'll get stuck in the position you put them in. To try to either move them a little or rotate them into position, forget it; they tear/break. Superglue doesn't stick. Anyway I will try to make some PVC fittings but I won't buy them again. Great concept, bad execution. There is an Eheim pre-filter which doesn't look as pretty but is much more durable and I ended up putting that on top of the intake filter (I bought it just in case). A few dollars more, but still less than $20 and worth it for the reliability.

Pros
  • Ideal for outdoor activities
Cons
  • Almost never
