Winner. Out of the box it took 5 seconds to fetch satellites, now it usually takes 2-4 seconds. The longest was 20 seconds. The screen is bright and easy to read in the sun. Automatic scaling can be disabled. You can choose between 2D or 3D display. You can choose whether or not to show upcoming services (restaurants, gas stations, etc.) on the map. I like them when they're not on the map because they're big blue squares that cover too much of the map for me. You can click on your car icon in the middle of the map and a screen will appear with all sorts of information about your location. On the right side you can select services like gas station, restaurant or hospital and once you click on it it will take you there. Info boxes on the bottom right and left, the left one shows your speed (can't be changed) but the right one can easily be configured to show motorway mile markers (my favourite), ETA or altitude. To my surprise, mile markers are not only displayed on Interstates, but also on major US highways like US 84 and US 231 here in Alabama. The map can be set to rare, medium or busy (I like busy) and can always orientate north or turn with the vehicle. There is a small zoom indicator that shows you how zoomed you are and how big a mile will be on the map. The top green band on the display shows upcoming intersections and warnings for traffic jams, school zones, level crossings and sharp turns ahead. It warns of nearby red light cameras even if you're on the freeway and the camera is on the road below, a bit scary when I first saw it. The block has very little delay. At 30 mph you can drive 30 feet across an intersection before the display changes to the next intersection. At a speed of 35 km/h, the GPS will indicate in 2 seconds that the level crossing has been passed. The icon identifying the vehicle may have different graphics. I chose the blue triangle. There's a yellow arrow, but it has a red tip on one of the rear fins, which gives me the impression that that's the direction we're headed. Unfortunately, you cannot customize the color of the triangle. There are many graphics including trucks and vans. The routes are great and the maps are up to date even in my area which has recently had a lot of buildings and new roads. Updating the map is easy (and highly recommended once you get the device out of the box). Disconnect your device from the dashboard mount, connect the cable to your computer, download garminexpress.exe and this program will do the rest automatically. It warns that the update may take three hours, but it took me 15 minutes. In a truck, the device turns on automatically when power is applied. The swivel mount allows you to point the device in any direction. There doesn't seem to be any flimsy plastic parts just waiting to break. I have a 5 inch screen, that's a lot for me. All in all a great device with lots of customization options. Sorry I didn't try voice recognition.
