Powerbook went from no signal to great quality

I originally wanted to buy a 500mw flat antenna GSKY WiFi adapter that I bought earlier as a gift for someone who was having connectivity issues and it worked. Excellent. Then I saw this one for just under $12 and decided to try it on our old Mac Titanium Powerbook G4 that came with the original airport card that didn't seem to work. It was unstable even next to the router, and it didn't work at all in the bedroom, which was separated from the router by several concrete walls. By installing this adapter we get a complete connection. and speed! This also allows us to use WPA2 security on the router (the Powerbook G4 was not previously equipped for this). However, there are some features. Finding the right driver for this adapter for Mac was easy - all you had to do was find the "RT2571 driver". I installed the driver and one surprising thing was that it doesn't work with the airport icon. Instead, when you plug in the adapter, a proprietary menu appears listing all available networks. On first use, you'll need to go to the "Profiles" tab, set up a new profile called "Home" (or whatever) and choose your preferred WiFi network SSID (Wi-Fi network name) and password. From now on, the adapter should always look for this network and connect automatically whenever it is connected. One quirk we found is that if you let the Powerbook sleep while this thing is plugged in, it sometimes crashes. So you need to turn it off before you put the powerbook to sleep and set the power saver panel to not allow sleep after X minutes. Small inconveniences. I also tested it briefly on our MacBook Pro (Late 2010) and it worked fine. I haven't checked if he has the same sleeping problem. Assembly is pretty fiddly. I purchased a 3ft (1m) RevainBasics USB 2.0 A Male to A Female Extension Cable to ensure that we could handle the actual adapter less and position it where we want (usually hung on the wall).

Pros
  • Nice packaging
Cons
  • Slightly crumpled

These are G adapters, NOT N adapters
