I use this in my rat cage from time to time. It's very stable and allows me to challenge my rat with new types of movement in its cage. My perch rotates more than in the photo. However, he is still put in a cage. The piece of wood is about 1 and 3/8 inch in diameter. At the ends of the rod are discs about 1 and 5/8 inch in diameter. My rat nibbled a bit on this perch but didn't do much damage!
