Review on ๐Ÿ“บ Enhance Your Entertainment Experience with the DirecTV RC65 4-Device Universal IR Remote by Grace Brown

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Really good remote control; not suitable for mythtv.

I bought this remote for my Mythtv entertainment system (on Ubuntu). This is a really great remote control. Here's why I like it and why I bought it: (1) Good workmanship. Feels solid. Has a rubberized, non-slip backing.(2) Has all the buttons I need and nothing more. I don't like Windows MCE remotes that are cluttered with too many (extra) buttons. (3) Good color scheme. Symmetrical, responsive layout. The buttons are conveniently and logically arranged. (4) Lets you adjust the volume to either an AUX device (my Yamaha receiver/amplifier) or a TV. (5) The TV input button can be assigned to a TV or disabled. (6) Powered by AA (rare battery replacement). (7) Has an MCE configuration code. (8) Inexpensive (9) With optional backlight (surcharge). The reason this remote isn't ideal for me is because the only way to get all the buttons to work as advertised is to use the DirecTV code in programmable slot 1. I figured this would happen even before I bought it and expected to be able to train LIRC to make it work. (I'm an experienced Linux and Mythv user.) Unfortunately, the DirecTV-IR protocol seems to use temporal coding rather than spatial coding (or other common coding schemes like RC5 and RC5). This means that while LIRC can parse controller signals (in its DirecTV configuration), it cannot support certain operations such as key repeats. Therefore, you cannot just hold down the button and get the expected result. For me this is a deal breaker as showing the video or the manual pages is not acceptable. Additional configuration details to explain my score: [.] (although it's an RC24, it's basically the same as the RC64 and RC65). If I had taken the trouble to look into this configuration file beforehand, I would have refrained from this purchase. I want to say again that this is a really good remote control and as long as LIRC supports time encoding I will use it.
