I recently installed a Yakima Sparetime bike rack on my 2004 Honda CR-V. The Sparetime mounting plate attaches to the spare tire mounting bolts and behind the spare tire, and a 1-1/4" square metal tube runs horizontally from the plate through the center of the spare tire. To this metal tube the bike rack is then easily attached and at Simply removed when not in use.The problem I have found is that the original Honda spare tire cover did not fit the metal tube well and was difficult to put on and take off.It has enough flexibility to fit over a metal tube and comes on easily remove to reattach the bike rack. It is made of thick reinforced vinyl that is at least as strong as the original Honda case. Also, the elastic strap is like a high quality bungee cord and doesn't look like it will wear out soon.
