Beat's Noctua Plexiglas Fan

I've been impressed so far, mind you I haven't used it forever. First impression after unpacking: wow! Is that for $10?! That's great. Let's see if any of the other problems mentioned are present. I fitted a Pi4 and there were no fitment issues. The inserted SD card even closes perfectly with the outside of the housing! I was able to easily connect HDMI and USB-C power and peripherals without interference. Next I wanted to test the 3M 9448A application. First, I can't find anything good to suggest that this is exactly the duct tape. Second, when I look at RPi heatsinks, I see a lot of pictures of them attached with 9448a tape. (It's hard to tell which tape this person has, depending on how it's cut.) So I did a very unscientific thing and tested my ability to feel the temperature of a lightbulb and a kettle through tape. Yes, I felt both! Subdued compared to the bare surface, sure, but still hot enough to get your fingers tingling? Oh yeah. So I wanted to compare it to the Noctua fan case. I have made. He defeated his hands down. Both were tested with a thermal load of 20 parallel runs. shasum -a 256 /var/log/syslog (syslog hashing) 4 cores gives 5 rounds of execution. You can see both cooling profiles recover the same, but this case has the best overall operating temperature and is completely passive. So far, so good. Very impressive. Edit: November 26, 2020 I continued to run tests in various cooling situations. It turns out that despite a decent initial load, it hasn't reached a steady state yet. I later repeated the same test. The passive hull is still one of the best (red line), although not as good as it was when the hull was very cold (orange line). The Pi fan is the next executor, a regular fan that is less than 1cm away from the chip. I also ran a Pi fan with a 3V supply on the GPIO pins (much quieter, similar to Noctua, although it whines when my ear is very close). Noctua is further mounted and has no open face of the entire blade surface (there is no special hole drilled for it); so there is still a lot of room for improvement. The last thing not to do is get the tape to come off the chips very well without leaving any residue. I think this is important if I ever want to change my case configuration. Photos included! (It also gives an idea of how well it fits) PS All of these observations were good enough that I ordered another one.

Pros
  • Like everything so far
Cons
  • I'm worried
