I have problems with my right rotator cuff muscles. One (maybe two) of these is under my arm and it hurts like hell to move my arm up or forward, a movement I used to take for granted. I used a simple lacrosse ball to put pressure on the trigger points of the rotator cuff muscles in the upper back. The warmth and friction from this helps relieve pain in the muscles under the arm around the shoulder blades. I have to be careful not to overdo it - which is easy to do - otherwise it increases pain and mobility. It is also best to use this in conjunction with stretches.
