Works well in 2007 FJ Cruiser - with some modifications

We just fitted this unit to my son's 2007 FJ Cruiser Me can honestly say this is a good device for the price that offers good sound and GPS navigation as well as a lot of unexpected features. The touchscreen is bright and responsive, and the navigation system with integrated map offers acceptable performance. The GPS antenna can be installed on a small platform under the dashboard, behind the radio, under the dashboard compass box. (At first I didn't think it could "see" enough satellites when installed under the dash, but it worked fine!) The Bluetooth connection worked fine with the iPhone 5 and the audio from the built-in head unit The microphone worked good, so we didn't use the included external microphone. Even the buttons on the steering wheel work without an additional adapter. Simply program the buttons via the main unit's settings menu. Also, we ditched the included backup camera and added a bumper backup camera (car backup camera with 8 full HD CCD infrared night vision cameras, 170 degree waterproof) which is centrally located between the two parking sensors. (There is enough space between the plastic bumper cover and the actual metal bumper to allow the camera connector to exit through the pre-existing holes in the metal bumper.) So why four stars? Firstly, the front of the head unit perfectly matches the dashboard. Hole in the lid - no additional mounting kit required; Just use the factory mounts from the factory radio. However, the mounting holes on the factory brackets and the mounting holes in the main unit were misaligned, so the unit moved forward about 1/4 inch to allow the dash panel to be reinstalled. So we had to drill four new fasteners. Holes in each of the factory mounting brackets approximately 0.28" (center to center) behind the original holes. (Also, the locating tabs on the factory mounts need to be ground down.) For that reason, 1/2 star minus. But after that, the device fitted perfectly. Additionally, the instructions are sparse and barely mention the installation process. If you haven't installed your car stereo yet, you need more help than this guide. For the FJ Cruiser, the instructions do not mention how to handle the factory subwoofer. The included wiring harness works well and connects properly to the factory FJ wiring harness, but does not power the subwoofer circuit. After examining the pinout of the large main connector, we found that the blue wire pin is in the wrong socket. The socket to the left of the pin was empty, and that's where the blue wire/pin to power the subwoofer should have been placed. So we routed the blue wire/pin on the radio harness to the empty slot to the left of the wire and plugged it in and powered the pink/blue striped wire that powers the subwoofer. Went like clockwork! (I didn't have to connect the spare blue power antenna wire.) One more undocumented change is needed - minus another half star. Since it's only been installed for a few days, I can't say anything about durability. But we got an extended warranty. Overall I think this is a good buy and I recommend it for the 2007 FJ Cruiser.
