Whoever designed this cage obviously doesn't own any animals. Thanks to the design of the cage itself and the locking mechanisms used, it wasn't difficult for our cat to figure out how to get out. The first part of this review is about the design. While the "fold" aspect of the cage seems like a good idea, the problem is that it reduces the strength of the cage. BOTH SHELVES MUST BE INSTALLED, otherwise the integrity of the cage will be compromised. The trays actually sit on top of the crossbars (making them removable for easier cleaning), but there are few places for the crossbars to sit for effective support. This means that the crate is only best for small animals (kittens, puppies) as the arrangement of the two shelves leaves them little room to move. We ended up using locks and locking bolts to add extra support, but this isn't necessary for the cage. Encourage use by cats and kittens. The second part of this review is dedicated to cage locks. WARNING: YOU NEED ADDITIONAL COMPONENTS TO SECURATE THE DOOR AS SOME CATS RECOGNIZE THE SPRING MECHANISM. Most cat doors have a dual spring system that requires humans to squeeze the top and bottom springs together to open the door. These doors only use a spring-loaded top-down lock, meaning the cat can pick the lock and open the door, just like ours. I have to commend the guy but unfortunately the basic clasp was too easy for the cat. Unfortunately we are kind of stuck in the cage as going back is now out of the question. It works now because we helped make it better, but if you're thinking about crating a medium to large cat, be prepared that you might have to tweet a bit. I recommend a small chain with a clasp to secure the doors so they don't open. Finally, the last part of the review looks at how to use the cage. We have an 11 lb male who unfortunately requires an overnight stay at the Caged Inn due to his wandering and spraying. The shelves were big enough to hold them, so we placed them side by side (sacrifice the top door as there's not really room to easily collate trays). We bought a plastic shelf stand that makes a big bed for him to rest comfortably on (when he doesn't go to get off). This allows him to jump onto the shelves to sleep as we have a small tray under the shelves. also for food and water, but since he's only there a few hours a night it wasn't a big problem. Another note: Due to the cage's lack of structural support, we also recommend tying rolled towels to the base. the cell where it meets the platform. There is enough space between them for the cat's paw to easily get caught on it.
