I enjoy stone carving as a hobby. I use small dowels to hold the tiny pieces of flagstone while I grind them to shape and the larger ones as needed to "do-stick". A very hard green wax is used for this purpose and the 2nd picture shows a small piece of rock on top of my oversized dowel. For cutting and polishing small stones I needed this size. I can trim them if I have to as they are good hard birch wood. I liked the smooth wood with flat ends that allowed me to mount smaller stones such as turquoise. I couldn't buy long dowels and cut them exactly so the ends were that flat and even. I recommend this brand Mart Cobra 200x wooden dowel rod 1/4"x6", wooden dowel rods, cake dowels, cake sticks, wooden craft sticks, wooden craft sticks, wooden craft dowels, cotton candy sticks, wooden craft sticks, skewers.
