Review on πŸ”Š Design Engineering 050330 Boom Mat Speaker Baffles - 6.5" Round (Pack of 2) - Black: Enhance Sound Quality and Protect Your Speakers by Kyle Smithlin

Much more bass! Great progress!

Significant improvement in sound quality, especially bass. My rear speakers are in the B-pillars and are aligned to the side like a door speaker. I recently installed new Cerwin Vega speakers and a 200w Kenwood head unit. The extra power from my old speakers rattled the doors and body panels, but I didn't seem to have much bass in the car. Just a whole tremor. Someone suggested this and I'm glad they did! The Boom Mats were a bit large for my speaker cabinets, but because they are flexible I was able to squeeze and shape them into the speaker area to free up as much space as possible. Then install the speaker over the outside edge of the baffle as shown. I didn't know what to expect as I read reviews saying the sound improves but the bass is reduced or some people cut a hole in the back to allow the speakers to move more and thus more bass to get. I made a tiny hole just big enough for the wires to go through, expecting to have to cut an air hole later, but wanted to hear how they sounded unaltered. To my surprise and great satisfaction, the bass is much deeper and I can crank the bass on my head unit higher than before without distortion. I think these foam baffles can even work as passive bass radiators. However they appear, there is a significant difference! For people with a weaker system, they may need to cut the connector to allow their speakers to breathe, but my speakers work fine with Airtight Boom Mats and the sound is vastly improved. The bass is much deeper than if I had a subwoofer now. Best of all, the body panels and doors no longer rattle. The sound goes inside the car, not into the body. I don't have an amp, I have a deck. I tweaked the settings a bit to get the best sound, but speakers with baffles sound a lot better than without. Highs and mids are still bright and crisp, while bass sounds much fuller and deeper, filling the booth. I highly recommend trying these out if you want to reduce wheezing and improve sound quality. You may need to cut out the bass port, but I didn't. Even if it does, it still improves sound quality and isolates vibration from the body panels. Another company makes a similar product out of silicone that doesn't have a backing, so it's just wide open. I find the closed design fits my speakers well, but there is also enough room in the speaker holes in my car to leave room between the foam and the back of the speakers. If the phone is pushed all the way to the back of the speakers they don't have room to breathe then they probably won't work and a port (air hole) will be needed. I also used the full-size version rather than the slim version. As for the people who didn't get a good result, it must have something to do with the specific speaker size, type and power rating and maybe the setup too, because they work really great for me. I was shocked at the increased response at low frequencies. Featuring a Kenwood KDC stereo, 200w, 50w per channel, Cerwin Vega 4x6 dash speakers (no baffles required, they don't rattle anything) and boom mats behind Cerwin Vega 6X9 with three-way budget on the rear. No more rattling or unwanted vibrations, the bass is much deeper and the low frequencies are also clearer. I think the enclosure helps stabilize the woofers so they don't move too much when I turn up the volume. But the foam gives, so it moves a bit with the speakers instead of holding constant air pressure like a wooden speaker box. Very happy with this thanks!
