The Kaito 1103 is a nice novelty. It works fairly well on HF, has two pretty good filters and works in SSB mode, but the seriously poor ergonomics and gray markings on a gray background make for a frustrating tuning experience. Spend a little more and you can get a decent receiver with a synchronous detector like the Tecsun PL-660 or the Sony SW7600GR. The more I use this radio, the more I dislike it. I find images everywhere and they are most evident in the LW and MW bands. I can't stand the fact that this thing can't constantly adjust but gets stuck in range segments. This is particularly annoying as this radio has continuous coverage from 100kHz to 29999kHz! I understand that this thing is trying to emulate an old analog multi-band receiver, but why also imitate spurious factors? The two most important qualities of a radio for its size, that the radio has dual bandwidth and the ability to adjust the sideband, are almost entirely negated by idiotic ergonomics and their inability to control the picture. BAND+ simultaneously. The radio will start searching down. Here's the fun part - the radio scans below 100kHz after all. Stop scanning at this point and store the frequency (any frequency below 100kHz will do) in memory. In the future, you can access this mode simply by loading this save. This mode allows you to tune to 0Hz (not that the circuit is designed for that) and "below". Important note for LW and MW DXers. In this mode, the ferrite rod is disabled and the antenna input goes to the pin and external antenna input. In this mode, the frequency display bar is invisible. To exit this mode, simply press one of the BAND buttons.
