Pointless ergonomics, weak receiver

The Kaito 1103 is a nice novelty. It works fairly well on HF, has two pretty good filters and works in SSB mode, but the seriously poor ergonomics and gray markings on a gray background make for a frustrating tuning experience. Spend a little more and you can get a decent receiver with a synchronous detector like the Tecsun PL-660 or the Sony SW7600GR. The more I use this radio, the more I dislike it. I find images everywhere and they are most evident in the LW and MW bands. I can't stand the…

Fantastic sensitivity and features in an affordable package

I own a lot of radios and some of them are more expensive and better but for the money the Kaito 1103 is a killer radio. Can't comment much on AM or FM because I mostly use it for shortwave and SSB (single sideband), but from Northern Illinois I can easily reach Toronto and New York at night on AM, plus tons of FM stations. I would like the auto scan to put the detected AM and SW stations in temporary storage, like it does on my Tecsun PL-660, but it works fine. I think Autoscan in FM has…

Great quality at a bargain price

I really like this little radio. It works very well on all bands - exceptionally good performance for such a cheap radio. It has some unusual features and the ergonomics are a bit unusual too, but it's actually not difficult to use at all. A particular stumbling block for some users is the lack of a dedicated volume control. While it would be an improvement to have one, the current layout isn't too bad. I usually hold the radio in my left hand and turn the dial with my right. Anytime I need to…

KA1103 is the second cousin of the Grundig G5

It is little known that the KA1103 and the Grundig G5 share the same motherboard and this is evident even without disassembly. The button, switch, dial and socket are all the same, even the back of the KA1103 is made of the same mold. If you own or have owned a G5, aside from the completely different user interface, you know exactly how the KA1103 will fare in terms of sensitivity and selectivity on all bands. The G5 was a great performer in many ways, if you're lucky enough to get a good one…
