This is my husband's text message to our daughter in Colorado Springs. Thank goodness we had a safety wire or we could have killed people! Bike rack today as I drove the interstate through Dallas. Very scary and without the emergency safety measures (locking the bikes while riding) the bike would be dead! This was due to a design flaw in the bike rack. Bikes are held upright (90 degrees) with an inverted J-clamp. The clamp is held in place by pressing on a vertical support with a hand-tight threaded knob. For over 500 miles, the bumps in the road made the bikes bounce up and down. Each upward impact pushed the J-clamp slightly towards the bar and was no longer held firmly against the bike. The bike leaned from 90 degrees vertically to about 85 degrees. (The wheel mounts on the bottom of the rack are too wide (probably to accommodate an e-bike and other fat tires) and this caused the bike to keep tipping over as there was nothing to stop the tire from tipping.) When this happened , the bike could slip under clamp J and fall backwards. We wrapped the bikes in rope and locked them before we left. The cable kept the bike from falling off - not for its intended purpose. I suspect the manufacturer was aware of this shortcoming as they included a strap with instructions on how to put it on the bike.
