Review on ๐Ÿถ OptiCoat Flea Comb by Carlos Deuschle

Works very well. Depending on the fur and character of the cat, we had to find different techniques.

I was surprised at how many fleas our cats had. We don't have a carpet and they are in the cats but somehow they got them and we didn't realize what was going on until they got loose. This comb is comfortable for our short haired cats. Also picks up scabs from scratching. I had to catch the fleas out of the comb for a few seconds, for example with scotch tape, otherwise they tended to jump off, although some only crawled from one side to the other. We've also seen soapy water suggested, but that wets the fur and can cause a little more tangling or tugging, so we didn't want to go that route. It is necessary to use good striking technique and take into account the character of the cat. One of our cats loves to be picked up and laid straight for many cycles to pet and ribbon brush some fleas. One of them is more delicate so it took two people to handle it. Short strokes and frequent trimming worked best on our thick-haired cat, while long strokes from cheek/neck to tail worked best on a cat with a finer coat and coat. Both methods have a few fleas per round. I'm not sure what technique would be required for long haired cats as the teeth are very close together so they can get tangled. I read somewhere a suggestion to use a light colored sheet or towel to catch fleas that jump or fall off the comb before they are caught; The beige terry bath towel worked well for us, the fleas had a hard time jumping around once on it and instead tend to burrow in so they were promptly washed and dried on a hot cycle to get rid of these guys . We were skeptical but bought one as "let's try it just in case" and damn it paid off.

Pros
  • Suitable for all pets
Cons
  • Wrinkled packaging
