Great alternative to data center emergency carts

Purchased for use during data center installation as some areas do not have easy access to emergency carts. Used on both Mac and PC platforms. The small form factor is great for stowing in your travel bag. My only complaint is that when using it, the font on the screen emulation is small and I can't find a way to make it bigger so it's easier to read. If anyone has any advice on this I would greatly appreciate it!

Pros
  • Finally bought
Cons

No longer works with Mac OS X

Startech does not update Macintosh drivers/applications. Most of the time they worked with OS X 10.11, but they don't work with OS X 10.13 (High Sierra) - the app starts but closes immediately. Startech also missigns the application, meaning newer versions of OS X won't run it at all without a dangerous workaround. Obviously a lot of work went into making the app - they need to keep it up to date. Her inability to do it overnight turned this handy $350 gadget into a paperweight.

Rubbish, terrible build quality

I ordered one of these and when it arrived the pins on the VGA connector were bent. I sent it back to Revain for a replacement and got another one. This one had straight pins and I thought it was great until I lit it. After starting, I could see the remote computer normally. It was a bit slow compared to IOGEAR, but at least it worked. The main problem was that the USB keyboard and mouse kept disconnecting. When plugged in, the keyboard didn't respond at all. The input to the remote machine was

Not the cheapest but the easiest way to connect to KVM!

Have you ever been to a data center and couldn't find an emergency truck? This product is for you. This USB device works equally well on Mac or PC and connects your laptop to a server or device and allows your laptop, keyboard, mouse and monitor to be the server/device. The software is a bit quirky and sometimes requires a manual update. to clean up some screen artifacts, and every now and then after disconnecting and reconnecting (e.g. Highly recommended, especially for people who travel to…

  • Best in its niche
Cons

Ideal for data center work.

I bought this because I always go to data centers and hate to look or just HOPE there's an emergency cart lying around or that the customer has KVM in a rack . It fits easily in my laptop bag and carries me around on the truck or plane. And if, like me, you have a 15-foot USB cable, you can sit in the hot aisle instead of the cold one. You data center monkeys will know what I'm talking about. But it works exactly as advertised. You'll see everything from POST on everything from desktops to HP…

Pros
  • Top marks for support and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other options

Great device if you do a lot of system tweaking.

Took this a long time to work as I was out setting up the system. This is a HUGE benefit versus having to carry around a monitor, keyboard and mouse to set up the hardware. I started this once because of a "bug" in the interface when connecting to HPE server hardware. Using command windows instead of a GUI - the keyboard had some buffering - basically took your time, or close and restart, everything works fine. I mostly use a new ThinkPad with Windows 10 and no matter which USB port I tried…

Works great. I need this when I go to customers and they don't have a ready made KVM setup in their rack. This product works great. The server/machine console opens as a software window on your laptop. It's great to take screenshots of devices during the loading screen. Also, you can share your desktop with someone else so they can see the device startup process. Works the same as iDRAC or iLO. Please note that this device is a NOTECONS01 block. There are two different units. The other version…

I like it because a) I don't have to hunt.

With the USB security issue discovered in 2014, I'm finding it increasingly difficult to trust virtually any USB device I don't own/control connected to my servers. Even before that, someone could plug a simple hardware keyboard recorder into those USB keyboards on data center emergency carts. I like it because a) I don't have to hunt for an emergency cart in the data center to find a monitor/keyboard at a customer's site, and C) it's light/compact - easily fits in my cable/tool bag. Pretty…
