Although this unit cost a few dollars more than the others, I bought it because I wanted it in my kitchen next to the gas range. As I'm getting older my sense of smell isn't that strong, so I decided to get some detectors (I also bought one to walk around by the gas stove). When you first connect the device, a digitized female voice explains that it is being calibrated. which takes 3 minutes. The device then sits quietly (hope I never have a gas leak!) in a socket with a blue light flashing from time to time to let you know the device is working. The flashing light is not distracting and I only notice it at night when I let the dog out at 2am. The unit (like all natural gas detectors) needs to be replaced every 5 years so I dated mine to remember its age. I am very happy with the purchase.
