They're thin but effective. I bought these last year for the winter but have also started using them in the summer even on 100+ F days in Bakersfield. They prevent mosquitoes, flies and other flying insects from getting into the mouth. When the weather gets colder, I wear them in layers. They are more effective at keeping my face, nose, lips and sinuses warm than any balaclava I own. On very cold days I use them in combination with hats or balaclavas. I only wash them by hand, but over time they still get little fluffy balls; that's the only problem i had.
