Review on Convenient and Versatile: Malone Downloader Folding J-Style ๐Ÿš— Universal Car Rack Kayak Carrier with Bow and Stern Lines by Mike Bonilla

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Satisfied, but would go a different route.

I bought this bag because I thought it would be a good bag for a mid-range kayak. I drove them on the Autobahn at 65, probably the recommended maximum. They do what they have to do. I recommend them if you're looking for foldable racks and don't want to pay the price of the Thule version. The straps that come with it work perfectly. I love that it comes with bow and stern lines if you're going at higher speeds. I have Thule Aeroblades handlebars and they are holding up well. Poorly. A lot more plastic than I thought. But what worries me the most is that the teeth that interlock are plastic. I also don't like the small teeth that make it almost impossible to set both holders at the same angle. The piece of plastic on top that holds the strap sometimes slips out but worst of all there is a gap and 80% of the time the strap falls out rendering it even completely useless. If I had to do it all over again, I would use regular kayak handlebars that don't fold. There are very few benefits other than the strap slides easily onto the back bar, but again it slips out of the plastic and falls off and you're back to where you would be if you didn't have it. Everyone. The time it takes to fold and unfold and the worry of aligning the corners and making sure you don't break teeth when installing take away from the convenience.
