Review on MakeSkyBlue 60A MPPT Solar Charge Controller with LCD Display - Auto 12V/24V/36V/48V Solar System (Model 60A-V118) by Corey Vaz

Has Worked Well: Generators and Portable Power Supplies

This charge controller seems to work well so far and has never exceeded the battery voltage setting like the PowMr version I bought. This was critical for me as my inverter would shut down rendering the PowMr charge controller unusable and unsafe for the battery and inverter if the output voltage went above the setting. This MakeSkyBlue charge controller tracks max power very quickly, but it doesn't. seems to block at the maximum point compared to PowMr. With my installation of 1020w solar panels (4255w x 60 cells in series) I regularly get over 1000w from them with PowMr but with this MakeSkyBlue I only get about 800w max so deducting 1 star from the rating. Update: Further testing has shown that the PowMr charge controller may have misreported my solar panel power when estimating, so this MakeSkyBlue charge controller is reliable for now. I got it up to 2.4 kW (about 45 amps) with no problems; It feels hot at this power level, but temperatures have been capped at 52 degrees Celsius. Update 2: Downgraded to 2 stars due to a similar issue noticed by another reviewer. This regulator does not search broad enough to find optimal performance when the solar panels are partially shaded. The shaded solar cells still produce almost nominal voltage but very little current, and this controller captures maximum power by using that low current at high voltage, which is very little power. Maximum power in shaded solar panels is actually achieved at a lower voltage but higher current flowing from unshaded cells through bypass diodes built into the panels, bypassing the shaded cells. So if your solar panels never shade, or you don't care when they shade, this controller will suffice, but otherwise it's not a true MPPT controller that needs to periodically scan a wide range of voltage/current combinations to find optimal performance . .
