Good field mount for wide angle photography

Bought to replace an aging Celestron SLT mount which I use in equatorial mode when camping to get wide angle shots. This mount can easily be used in EQ mode and will even star align in this mode which the slt is not very good at in EQ mode. Pros: Better tracking than slt. With the right balance and alignment I can shoot up to 1 minute unguided at 70mm, around 30 seconds at 200mm. And it can be controlled with optional st4 adapter. Goto is actually pretty accurate, especially after targeting 3 stars. And you can use the closest star sync for even more accuracy. Large display with lots of information. Much better than a phone's two-line display. With a counterweight, it can withstand a fairly small load. Weaknesses: Never been able to successfully control or guide the mount through the handbox. Neither driver works well enough, even with the lx200. So you need to find st4 adapter from them and use st4 compatible camera. - The display becomes quite slow and almost unreadable in cold weather, especially blinking text. - A sufficient imbalance in the rear axle can cause the gears to slip. next to useless. Buy a good photo tripod and mount it on it. Overall, a fairly light and compact camping (and even backpacking) mount for the price that's hard to beat.

Pros
  • Good product for the price
Cons
  • Hard to say
