These scissors are instantly very sharp. I bought these to trim my bangs but actually also used them to trim the split ends I have. Even after using it, I no longer had split ends on my hair. I've read that some scissors can do more damage to my hair after use, but I definitely don't see that with these scissors. I was even able to trim my son's hair and my husband's beard with ease. They came with a plastic case that I keep these scissors in. It's just easier to store them that way. As for cleaning, I just bought a cheap soft bristle toothbrush and it seems to work really well and doesn't damage the scissors. Some cut hairs may get stuck at the junction of the scissors, but again, just brush them out and the hairs will just pop out. It is also very comfortable to hold.
