Be careful when using them.

Drills are well made and strong enough to get the job done. However, they are 6 inches smaller than I prefer. After inserting them into the battery jar you will have about 8 inches between the chuck and the tip of the auger. My wife and I have planted bulbs that say to plant 8 inches deep, so I drilled into the ground as deep as I could. There were a few rocks in the ground and we planted the bulbs near well-established bushes and shrubs in our garden - just a few feet away. On a couple of occasions the bit would "grab" something in the ground and twist the bit (and my hand/arm) hard before I could let go of the trigger. Eventually the drill caught something right in the last few inches of the trench. Before I could let go of the drill's trigger, he and my hand were pulled hard into the ground next to the hole. At that point, I couldn't let go of the trigger. The drill literally ripped apart before stopping. (It was a quality drill - a Dewalt DCD777 model.) I think it could have been a lot worse. Use a drill that's a few inches to a foot long - long enough that you can drill holes without the drill getting close to the ground. As an alternative, a landscaper friend of yours suggested a hand drill, a roughly 3 1/2 foot high tool with a T-handle on top that you screw into the ground.

Pros
  • Drill
Cons
  • So far so good
