I use corn based clumping litter, it is very light and seems to leave a mark everywhere. I use one of those toilet mats that looks like felt on top but is rubberized on the bottom and picks up a bit of dirt. I decided to try one of them to see how it works. I have one of those slotted wood shower mats that I go out on. I bought a rug long enough to go completely under the wooden shower mat and cover the space in front of the tray. When this wooden shower mat lay on top of the garbage rug, it quickly straightened up again. So if you have a folded rug that doesn't lay flat, put something on top of it for a few days and the crease should go away. In terms of garbage collection, it's way better than felted rugs! With felt I had to constantly vacuum the dirt both off the carpet and underneath - I still didn't understand how the dirt could gravitate under the carpet! Not only did this allow me to lift and tilt it so that any debris that was being tracked from the outside went back into the bowl, but the entire area under the mat was 100% debris free! Not only does this significantly reduce the amount of trash, but it also makes it easier to throw the trash back into the box. I save waste and time when vacuuming. I was a bit concerned that cats wouldn't like the feel of the texture under their paws, but so far that hasn't been an issue.
