Bonavita vs. MoccaMaster

I love a good cup of coffee and can't remember the last time I didn't start the day with a cup. After much research I bought Bonavita and was not disappointed. This was for a home away from home - we have a MoccaMaster in our main house which I love but really didn't believe it cost over $300. Both brew great coffee with precise heat, and both are certified by the American Specialty Coffee Association. Bonavita is marked with 8 cups and MoccaMaster with 10. Both brew about 40 ounces of coffee. Bonavita uses flat bottom filters while MoccaMaster uses conical ones. Bonavita has a 2 year guarantee and MoccMaster has a 5 year guarantee. Durability is part of MoccMaster's fame, but it's also more than twice the price of Bonavita. The structures are completely different. The MoccaMaster is large and somewhat industrial, while the Bonavita is much more compact. I like the look of both of them. While the Bonavita fits easily under almost any kitchen cupboard, be aware of the vapor this unit produces. You need room to pull it out from under the cabinet while brewing. The lid of the MoccMaster brew basket retains the steam, so the steam is not a big problem. The brew basket is located directly above the Bonavita pot. After the coffee is brewed, you need to remove the brew basket and screw on the lid. Not the main problem, but a nuance. It also prevents you from pouring a cup while the jug is brewing, which the MoccMaster allows as its brew basket sits on a ledge above the jug and has a non-return valve that stops brewing when the jug is removed. The Bonavita jets are arranged in a circle above the floor, while the MoccaMaster has a straight narrow rectangular sleeve. I don't know if that matters, as both thoroughly impregnate the soil. I've read that some people stir their coffee grounds while brewing with the MoccaMaster, but I've never done this and I love the coffee it makes. Bonavita has a pre-brew mode that moistens the ground coffee before brewing. Overall both models brew excellent coffee and recognize that the really crucial factors are pure filtered water and freshly ground coffee. I rated both devices 4 stars. Bonavita's brew basket design didn't earn it a 5-star rating, and the price of the MoccaMaster cost it a star. I chose Bonavita this time because of the price and I'm happy with my decision.

Pros
  • Nice
Cons
  • Good, but not great
