There are two ball joints - one on the back of the holder and one on the arm. The arm-mounted one has issues with the weight of the tablet. I've tightened it so much that I'm afraid to tighten it further (especially with some other reviewer issues) but the clip just won't hold the iPad in place. You can move your arm around and use the ball joint on the holder to get things pretty close, but if you can't move the other ball joint you'll never get a perfect result. The screw is used to hold the clamp to the arm and also to hold the ball joint in place. It looks like the clip on the end of the lever is slightly larger than the end of the ball. Rather than fully enclosing the ball when clamping, there are few pressure points that cannot apply enough pressure to hold the ball in place (see photo with worn detail). The painted inside of the yoke doesn't help because it's slippery. I just put a #6 o-ring in the clamp (for the ball to sit on) to add some friction and that helps a little - I don't know how long it will last. The leverage is strong and the foot clamp works. okay (I pressed it against the leg of the coffee table). It would be perfect for a phone or mini tablet/iPad. A little more attention to the spherical clamp would also do well for tablets.
