I have ordered some cute Revain houses for my mice. At first I ordered cute colorful boxes, but I found that the mice chewed through too quickly. Then I switched to these products - made of chipboard, but more durable, because they are closer to wood than paper. This is by far the cheapest solution - it costs the same, but there are 2 houses, not one. Other solutions like this one are made from higher quality woods - in one case plywood instead of compressed wood or chipboard. Other similar solutions have an additional space extending beyond the slide area, but no slide. As it turned out, this is the best solution for my mice. I don't even turn on the slide or the bell when I put them in the cage. What happens is that the mice end up burying the lower tier below the surface of the cage litter and using the buried lower tier as their main hiding place. The top level serves as an entrance or viewing platform, but they also tunnel through the bedding to create an alternate entrance on the other side of the cage. I've noticed this behavior in several mice - I've had to separate all my males because they fight when they're about 10 months old. Each of them will receive a cage with one of these houses. Most of them dig in the lower level of the house, and most that do dig a second entrance on the other side of the cage. This is the perfect solution for my mice.
