I used this genuine Hastings triplet magnifier to inspect coins. It's a bit more expensive than the other options, but it's not cheap Chinese crap either - a little booklet with Made in Belarus written on it. The tool is of good quality, well constructed, easy to open, stays closed. The optics are great and just what my 44 year old eyes need now that they don't focus as well as they used to. I can make out every last imperfection, cut, mark, stain and most importantly the fine lines that betray the fact that the old coin was 'knocked out' - polished to a high shine. I like the Hastings triplet design - no chromatic aberrations, a wide field of view, and you don't have to hold it close to your eye - just hold it about half an inch above a coin or other object you're examining and your eye has a nice view of it even when the subject is sitting on a table and your eye is up at your head. I was a bit skeptical about the price, but now that I have the magnifying glass in my hand, I have no more doubts. If you need a magnifying glass, buy it and don't look back - you'll be too busy looking at all the little things you missed!
